Last April 24th, 2022, at the Arsht Center Miami, project from Wired Amazon Discovering New Species won first place in the Biodiversity - Fauna category during the Green Awards 2022 Gala.
Green Awards is the most relevant sustainability festival in Latin America, and every year it awards, gives visibility, and creates networks among the best 500 social and environmental projects in Ibero-America, contributing to boosting the green economy by exhibiting regional initiatives in 8 categories aligned with the Objectives Sustainable Development (ODS).
Within the ODS in the development of science and innovation and the protection of biodiversity, where the Wired Amazon program developed by the ecotourism company Rainforest Expeditions in the Tambopata PERU National Reserve, combines state-of-the-art technology in its scientific research projects for the conservation of forests, adding added value to the forest by converting tourists who arrive physically and virtually into allies for conservation by carrying out citizen science.
Discovering New Species in the Peruvian amazon in Tambopata by Rainforest expeditions
The event brought together enterprises from different countries such as Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Mexico, and representatives of Peru among others, who participated for 5 days in an agenda full of learning and business opportunities.
During this week, the Vice Minister of the Environment of the Dominican Republic and the Ministers of the Environment of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Argentina, and Uruguay were present, who presented their actions for the recovery and conservation of the oceans.
The gala had the participation of the Mayor of Miami and the Mayor of Guayaquil, who expressed their resounding support for the development of festivals such as Green Awards that seek to make socio-environmental enterprises visible.
Discovering New Species studies tiger moth species through mitochondrial DNA which has a high mutation rate with the help of travelers from around the world who become citizen scientists at Rainforest Expedition ecolodges in Tambopata. This program has the collaboration of state entities such as SERNANP, CONCYTEC, INNOVATE, as well as the Moore Foundation and the Natural History Museum of the National University of San Marcos.
Rainforest Expeditions has been developing sustainable tourism in the region of Madre de Dios - PERU for more than 30 years, generating a network of allies for conservation which includes Native Communities such as the Ese Eja de Infierno with whom Posada Amazonas co-manages, state entities, the educational and scientific community.
